It doesn't take too long for her to meet Taranee Cook, another new girl, and instantly become friends though. They also meet Cornelia Hale, Irma Lair, and Hay Lin and start their friendship with mysterious things happening at a Halloween dance. Too many strange things are happening actually, what with clothes changing color, rigging pop quizzes, moving things with minds, and not to mention everyone seeing a mysterious crystal in their dreams, they decide to talk it over calmly at Hay Lin's place. That's where they learn something that changes their lives forever. Hay Lin's grandmother, Yan Lin, comes and pulls out the crystal from their dreams and announces that it is the Heart of Candracar and they are the new Guardians of the Veil, which is a fragile border protecting Earth from the evil Metamoor. Their job is to close all the portals, rips in the Veil so that evil doesn't leak through and leave Earth in danger. To do so, they were each given special powers over nature's elements. Irma controls water, Taranee masters fire, Cornelia comands earth, and Hay Lin harnesses air. She dares Nerissa to try to take the Heart...because she was ready for her. Later, Will becomes uneasy about the fact that Nerissa used to be the Keeper but later turned evil. To cheer her up, Hay Lin shows her a letter addressed to Yan Lin from another former Guardian, Kadma, who lives in Fadden Hills! The two girls teleport to Will's old hometown to see her and get some answers. They get some answers alright! Kadma gives Will a diary from Halinor, and then reveals to Will that she had been spied on her entire life, and then has the nerve to try and push them both out! Kadma realizes that Nerissa is back when Hay Lin starts whistling a strange tune that Nerissa had made up, "Neriss's Trill," and tells them the whole truth that they hadn't heard from Yan Lin. After Irma and Taranee share a nightmare with Nerissa while waiting up for Will, Cornelia figures that they can all take on Nerissa in their dreams and invites the other girls to a sleepover. Also after a quick stop at Eric's grandfather's laboratory, Will and Hay Lin head over to Cornelia's where they have a batte beyond their wildest dreams! Book #20: Whispers of Doubt (May 2006)

Or so it seems...Hay Lin's claim about hearing Nerissa's Trill is lost on the other Guardians who just want to enjoy helping Mrs. Rudolph with her retirement. With Will not wanting to even think about Nerissa, Hay Lin goes alone to see news about Halinor's diary. What she gets is a piece of interesting news of an 'invisable' star that was last seen when Will was born! Meanwhile, while Will is shopping for a gift for Mrs. Rudolph with Cornelia, whispers of doubt start taking over her mind. Thinking the Guardians are starting to betray her, Will runs away from the store, leaving Hay Lin, Cornelia, and Matt very confused. Up in Candracar, Yan Lin is continuely anxious and frustrated at the Oracle not acting as the past repeats itself. She visits Hay Lin in her dreams and gives her a powerful message that would help the Guardians. Hay Lin wakes with the sudden awareness that Nerissa is truly back. Nerissa, angry that she has a certain bond with Hay Lin that alerted the girl to her survival, tries to avoid her and instead, focus all her attention to breaking Will down. The farewell party for Mrs. Rudolph starts in Heatherfield and the Guardians agree to keep an eye on Will because of her strange behavior. It is Will's anger at her friends spying on her that gives "Mrs. Rudolph" the perfect chance to swoop in and convice her that they are really evil creatures trying to harm her. Will unleashes a powerful fury that leads her to fighting against her friends with her powers! Ashamed of her behavior, Will can't bear the weight of the Heart of Candracar and searches desperately for someone who could help, and finds Matt. A surprising twist leads you to the edge of the seat as Will struggles to find herself...but loses the Heart.

Book #21: A Weakened Heart (July 2006)
The Heart of Candracar is gone. The Guardians feel helpless as Nerissa starts to rage against Candracar in a full out war. And yet...the five girls push on for a way to fix everything and protect Candracar, Will most of all. Nerissa gets irritated that the Guardians are stubborn and won't give up and she tries to trap Will in a nightmare to confront her, but isn't even strong enough to keep Will inside her dreams! The girls continue their fight to regain their full powers as the Congregation of Candracar fights for the protection from Nerissa's oncoming wrath. W.i.t.c.h. visits the observatory again and Proffesor Lyndon tells them that he followed the coordinates written in Halinor's diary to an invisable star, a star named Cassidy! They make a plan to see if they can find the star later at night. Meanwhile, Caleb is rapidly healing in the Cosmos of Abeyance and finally comes out to be a warrior in the war against Nerissa. At night in Heatherfield, the girls sneak into the observatory to look through the telescope. They each look through it, but strangely, only Will can see the star. Will is determined to stay and figure out what the star means. The other four girls soon discover that Nerissa had sent Khor to destroy them as he comes into the observatory and pull their powers together to fight him off. Still in the same room, Will is astonished as the star falls down to earth and Cassidy appears before her. Will is relieved to have another Keeper of the Heart to talk to, but is distracted as she finds out that her friends are in danger. Cassidy tells her that they can hold off Khor and she gives Will her spark and a copy of the Heart of Candracar! Their meeting comes to an end and the Star of Cassidy fades away as Will transforms and saves Hay Lin from Khor. After Khor runs away, the Guardians go to Candracar ti help fight off Nerissa. Cornelia and Caleb start to have doubts about each other, but all feelings are put aside as the moment of battle is seconds away, and nobody knows if a new day will dawn for the temple...or if they will survive the encounter.

Book #22: A Choice is Made (December 2006)
Nerissa’s attack on Candracar continues as she does something unbelievable! She breaks the Heart of Candracar, leaving darkness to swallow up all of Candracar. They are confused on why they are back, but even more, that they had lost their powers! It isn't long before Hay Lin, Irma, Taranee, and Will each in turn start to lose focus on the situation at hand as they walk off with the boys that they like and enjoy their normal life, leaving Cornelia alone to search for answers. Cornelia goes to Kadma and tells her of the events, and that is when Kadma heavily exclaims that Candracar doesn't exist anymore! Terrified, Cornelia ran to her friends to tell them the news, but the other 4 don't remember anything about being Guardians! Cornelia sobbed as she ran away from them and bumbed into Peter. She forced herself to remember Caleb instead of falling under the spell that the others had gotten trapped in. She notices that she is also starting to forget everything. Desperate to hold onto her memories, Cornelia gets her drawing of Caleb and they all come flooding back. The Guardians all wake up back in Candracar as Nerissa's spell breaks. They realized that Nerissa had sent their minds into their Astral Drops' and was going to do away with them as they slept! Both sides are ready for battle! Before they can do anything, the two ethereal shields are drawn to each other and disappear as the Star of Cassidy connects with the Heart and heals it! Everybody then stopped their fight to watch the final showdown between Will and Nerissa. Nerissa taunted Will to have a normal life without the burden of the Heart, but Will refuses. But Will, realizing that the Heart needed to choose the Keeper, got chosen by the Heart in the end, leaving Nerissa to flee. The Guardians combined their powers to end the battle of Nerissa. Her Knights turned to their original forms and Candracar was saved! All that's left is another difficult decision in which a choice is made...
Book #23: Farewell to Love (February 2007)
Caleb decides to break up with Cornelia, leaving her heartbroken. The Oracle confessed that he knew their fate beforehand and Will angrily ranted on the Oracle about giving them proper respect, which is what she got as the entire Council admired her words and courage. Cornelia, wanting to get away from Caleb, agreed to fetch Galgheita from Heatherfield and send her to Candracar so that she and Caleb could return to their home in Meridian with the others. After being shortly reunited with Elyon, the Guardians journeyed home to sleep, but Will was in for a dangerous surprise. Her Astral Drop had run away, leaving Will in a heap of trouble! Panicing, Will told the girls the next day and they went on a frantic search for the Astral Drop. Astral Will was finally caught and she was holding photos of Matt Olsen! She reveals that she had fallen in love with him, but was distressed because she saw him holding another girl and didn't want to go back and be absorbed by Will. They took the Astral back to Will where the story was told, to Will's shock. Will absorbed her drop and witnessed the events herself as her heart shattered. Hay Lin brightens up the mood by showing up with braces that are designed with each girls' element symbol. The girls realized that they had just gotten through a nightmare, but now it was maybe time to look forward to a brighter future.

Will is even so angry at the pair that she results to beat Mandy into the swimming by any means, even magical ones! Meanwhile, Taranee and Hay Lin are getting ready for a great "date" with Nigel and Eric as they go to interview the owner together for a report on the Rock and Roll cafe, but get intertwined in trouble with Uriah's gang and in up in the police station (and stirring up some mama drama for Taranee)! The biggest surprise comes when Will's dad, Thomas, suddenly comes into the picture and is intent on getting back on Will and Susan's good graces. Susan isn't buying any of it and Thomas continues to spend time with Will and shower her with gifts as a mysterious guy spies on Susan and Mr. Collins. At the swim finals, Will finally hears Mandy's side of the story and realizes that they have more in common than she thought, but doesn't know how what to do about the way she treated Matt. Things seem to be steadily getting worse in the girls' lives, but as Taranee is grounded and looking through her mother's court case files, the things that she discovers could probably change one of her friends' lives.
3. A Crisis on Both Worlds

Book #25: Enchanted Waters (June 2007)
Irma meets a mysterious guy named Jewell at the police station where her dad works and develops a friendship with this man who can see the short future and knows that she controls water! Irma tries to tell her friends about Jewell's predictions, but to no avail. Things get a little steamy as both Irma and Taranee go off on their mothers and we discover that Irma's real mom had died when she was young and Anna had married Irma's father and taken over the loving role. After their tender discussion, Irma's mom gives Irma a book that Jewel had sent her, mentioning aquatic creatures called water shadows. Cornelia and Will go to research the creatures the next day at school and are assisted by their newest computer science teacher, Ralph Sylla, who is actually another detective in disguise to investigate the W.i.t.c.h. girls! As the Guardians try to solve the mystery of Irma's new friend, they discover a secret hideout where they discover Jewell is tied up. But is he though? The man is actually Bejamin Crane, a local fisherman who was rescued from drowning by a water shadow that took on his own appearance! Jewell helped Crane with his fishing, bringing suspicious crooks to kiddnap Crane and blackmail Jewell. While the Guardians capture the crooks and Irma helps turn Jewell into his true form, Sylla smiles and declares that he would figure out the girls' mystery. Things settle down a little as Cornelia took Irma's advice to start skating again and stays strong after her breakup with Caleb and as Taranee happily watches her mom warn Susan Vandom about Thomas' plans to gain custody of Will. What will happen now that Will's parent life seems to be taking a dead freefall?

Book #26: Friends Forever (August 2007)
Will's depression over her parent situation seems to deepen even more when Matt doesn't talk to her, so she decides to confide in Mandy at swim practice until her dad interrupts to give her a car ride home on the rainy day. However, Will doesn't like the way her father's conversation is going at all and jumps out of the car and walks all the way home for her mother to inform her of her dad's horrible plans of gaining custody of Will and taking her away from Heatherfield. The next day, the students at Sheffield take a test to decide who would go on the student exchange program to Redstone, but Will can't even concentrate. The girls get into some trouble with Uriah's gang and teleport out of the school, to the curious suspicion of Sylla. Will arrives at her house just in time to hear her father blackmailing her mother: he wanted a lot of money, or he would take Will away forever! She instantly went to her four friends to tell them of the latest dillema and Cornelia, Irma, and Hay Lin head for Thomas' spy to get rid of the photographic evidence while Will and Taranee go to Fadden Hills to talk to Kadma about her father's weakness. Kadma tells them about how Thomas had turned into a bad person and had ruined their lives, but she says that she will not help them with their problem (although she finally helps in the end). Will finally returns to her house to discover that her father had dropped out of the court case and that she could stay with her mom! The girls all are happy that they get to stay together forever!
[Note: The Chapter book deleted the end of the story, but this is what happens]
Just after Will's friends leave Susan and Will in their happiness, the good mood doesn't last long. Will's dormouse suddenly runs out of the house in excitement and gets hit by a car. Horrified, Will and her mom drive to Matt's grandfather's pet shop, but they soon find out that there is nothing to be done for her poor dormouse. Will says goodbye to her beloved pet as she cries and walks outside to the park with Matt following her. They both remember meeting the dormouse and each other at that very spot and Matt kisses Will on the cheek as Will prepares for what the future would hold.
